Chelmsford Theatre Workshop is staging Marat Sade by Peter Weiss The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as performed by the inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade. He is the famous inmate of the asylum of Charneton, Paris and has written a play to be performed by his fellow inmates. Sade was imprisoned for his subversive, pornnographic writings but it is 1808 and the Napoleonic authorities believe in rehabiliation. The play is set in 1703, during the French Revolution and concerns the assassination of revolutionary thinker and leader Jean Paul Marat by a young girl Charlotte Corday. Why did she travel to Paris to kill a great man, crippled by illness? Why murder a hero? Strong languary and sexual innuendo.
